The STRIVE Prep – Excel choir program is thrilled to announce that they will host a concert featuring Gaelynn Lea on Wednesday, October 4 at 6:30 p.m. The classically trained violinist and songwriter, whose musical reach grew significantly last year after winning the NPR Tiny Desk Concert, will spend time doing a songwriting workshop with the Excel choir, and perform one of her songs alongside them during the concert – a rare opportunity that scholars are excited for.
“The students were in awe of her musicianship when we watched her Tiny Desk concert and I know this will be a memorable event for them,” Choir Director Edwina Lucero said. “She is an amazing musician who also has an incredible message about the abilities of all people to do something they want to make happen.”
In addition to her impressive musical skills, Ms. Lea is also a public speaker. She has a congenital disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or Brittle Bones Disease and uses her platform to advocate for and speak about disability, finding inner freedom, and the power of music – topics that Mrs. Lucero is sure will not be lost on her talented musicians.
“One of the most inspiring things to witness as a teacher, is the growth in our scholars’ confidence,” she said. “They learn to really use their voice – in singing, but also to thrive in their lives. Being on stage gives them the confidence to be their authentic selves and advocates for themselves in every aspect of their lives – in and out of school.”
Don’t miss the rare opportunity to see our talented choir perform alongside Gaelynn Lea. The event is free for STRIVE Prep families, and tickets are only $5 at the door for community members. Tickets sales will support Excel’s music program..
